The Gmc Collectible Motor Home

In the 1970′s, General Motors entered the RV market. Drawing on the exuberance of the times, the company set out to create the ultimate American Motor home.

Their aim was to produce a top-of the-line vehicle with cutting-edge design and construction, not just another competitor in the already crowded vacation vehicle market.

The common design in this era was a boxy, ungainly and top-heavy unit on a truck chassis. The GMC vehicle was intended to be a completely new design in every way.

Design work began in 1970, with the market introduction planned for 1973. “Doesn’t look like a box or ride like a truck” was the GMC ad slogan.

The new vehicle would be unusual for this era in several ways. First of all, it was to have a front wheel drive, a rare concept in cars of that day and unheard-of in mobile homes.

The drive train and suspension were taken from the design of the Oldsmobile Toronado. The 265 horsepower 455 cubic inch Oldsmobile engine was attached to a Turbohydramatic 425 transmission with torsion bar suspension.

The rear suspension was a product of GM’s bus design, using dual swing arms, one leading and one trailing, with a single air spring on each side.

Instead of a auto body steel, the body was to be made of lightweight aluminum and molded fiberglass-reinforced plastic such as was used in the Chevrolet Corvette.

The front wheel drive and independent swing arm rear suspension brought great improvement to the standard motor home design.

The lack of drive shafts and axles underneath the coach allowed a very low floor height, leading in turn to a low overall vehicle height and lower center of gravity.

Aside from easier entry and exit, this reduced rollover risk and wind resistance and made the vehicle much safer and easier to operate for buyers

accustomed only to car driving.

A six-wheel braking system, with disc brakes on the front and drum brakes on all four rear wheels, further enhanced drivability.
Previous motor home design focused mainly on the use of the vehicle as a temporary home once it had reached its destination, an extended stay in a mobile home park or a camping spot.

Ease of getting to the destination was of secondary concern, and cumbersome handling on the road was taken for granted. GMC made a special point of targeting this feature for improvement by adding visibility from the driver’s seat with a panoramic expanse of glass.

The motor home was featured in 23 foot and 26 foot lengths, fairly small even for this era.

Nowadays, much larger models are common. The motor home’s interior design was compact, with no permanent sleeping areas in the original design. All beds were converted from seating areas when required.

Hot water was provided by water heaters using engine coolant loops, which produced water so hot it could actually present a scalding hazard since coolant temperatures usually exceed 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

The refrigerator was powered by a standard automotive battery, adequate only for overnight use before recharging.

The prototype was first displayed in May 1972 at the Transpro ’72 trade show in Washington, D.C. Production started in 1973 with two models, Model 230 and Model 260, 23 and 26 feet long respectively.

They were sold with a finished interior for the public as well as unfinished to other RV manufacturers such as Avion and Coachman, who then provided their own interiors before reselling to consumers.

30 different floor plans were available, and models were priced from $35,000 to $40,000.

The GMC vehicle changed slightly over time, the most notable alteration coming in 1977 when the 455 cubic inch engine was replaced by a 403 cubic inch model in response to the energy crisis.

This decade caused hardship for all RV manufacturers as the increased price of fuel pushed large gas guzzling vehicles out of the market.

The GMC motor home had never sold at high volumes, and the company decided that the RV production facilities could be more profitably used to make light trucks. After the manufacture of 12,921 vehicles, production of motor homes was discontinued after the 1978 model year.

Almost immediately after production ceased, GMC motor homes became collectors’ items, with owners’ associations being established to provide parts and service for these vehicles.

Small manufacturers and garages developed a cottage industry servicing them. In 1992, as General Motors prepared to scrap all remaining tools and parts, Cinnabar Engineering purchased all the motor home manufacturing supplies and negotiated a deal to continue to provide parts for the discontinued vehicles.

In 1992, a monthly magazine called GMC Motor home Marketplace was introduced, and in 1994 Cinnabar started publishing a quarterly newsletter called GMC Motor home News.

The vehicle’s futuristic design has even found a place in pop culture: Mattel Toys created die-cast versions of the GMC motor home for its Hot Wheels line.

More than 50 different GMC Hot Wheels are available, and in 1977, Mattel released three toy GMC versions in a Barbie Doll Star Traveler promotion.

In an amazing example of customer loyalty and product durability, more than 8,000 units are still registered by owners.

An internet search of “GMC Motor home” produces 771,000 results, as sites advertise motor home parts, engines and upgrades as well as classic car rallies for owners.

Used GMC motor homes sell for $10,000 to $15,000 depending on the condition of the vehicle.

With the popularity of recreational vehicles staying steadily strong, RV manufacturers must compete for customers who will hopefully repeat business, and share their enthusiasm about their RV with friends and family. Young families with children still at home and those both old and young who have no children at home are discovering the joys of the recreational vehicle lifestyle. All of the manufacturers must tap into these markets by using not only creative advertising techniques, but also by listening to what consumers want and responding with products that meet those needs.

A lot of the advertising that is done for RV manufacturers is actually done through dealers. Both online and local dealerships advertise big sales that spotlight some of the more popular makes and models from the different manufacturers. Dealers are often the “face” of the RV manufacturers. Some dealers only offer one line of recreational vehicle. In this situation the dealer educates themselves and then the customers on all of the best features and latest improvements that the manufacturer has made.

RV manufacturers also reach their target audience by using literature that is age specific. You may see ads for RVs in magazines that are mainly read by people who are retired for example.

One way that some RV manufacturers maintain their steady customer base is through offering activities and additional resources to their buyers. They may have rallies, conventions, road side stops, etc. along with owner magazines that cater to their current customers. Then, RV manufacturers can ask their customers what they like/dislike about their current RV and what they can do to improve it. After this, they take the information back to their headquarters and implement those ideas which have the most feasibility and the most popularity. When RV manufacturers listen to their customers they will have more success and repeat business.

All RV manufacturers try to have something about them that sets them apart from the others. They may tout their customer service after the sale; they may also be the “luxury” choice for buyers with more expensive, but also more beautiful and better made RVs. Some also talk about the manufacturing process itself-they may rely on personal accountability and numerous quality checks and tests by their workers to ensure that your RV is made perfectly and up to standard.

Choosing an RV is very much choosing the manufacturer as well. You must decide what is most important to you in your recreational vehicle whether it is price, features, construction, etc. and find a manufacturer that mirrors your choices.

Lest the vehicle originally had a very expensive inverter, its effectiveness is probably lower than 92%. Using The Rv Blue Book For Motorhome Valuations

If you are looking to purchase or sell a used RV, you want to compare your rig to the NADA RV blue book to make sure that you are selling or buying at a reasonable price. RV blue books are based on percentage of Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price. When you browse the guide, you want to look at other mobile homes of the same class, make, and model. With the wide range of options that you might have, compare the amenities and features to gauge your price as well. Age and overall condition are probably the top two determining factors of your RV’s selling price. If it has been maintained on a regular basis and if everything works properly like appliances and electrics, you will have an easier time fetching a higher price. Other things to consider when pricing your RV are mileage and other features such as solar panels, satellite TV, air conditioner, and kitchen appliances. There are many things that add up to the final selling cost of a used RV, so do your homework before settling on a price.

The Nada blue book is a great starting point from which you can adjust your price, depending on the condition and by how spruced up it is. Simple things like adding curtains and modern appliances can add hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to your selling price.

Typically, online valuations for RVs are much higher than what a dealer will pay for it. If you go to the Nada Guide website, the RV section has listings of RV manufacturers, where you can click their “Get Price” button. After valuing your RV, you will likely have to deduct another 10% from that price if you plan on selling it to a dealer. This is because they will pay you the wholesale price.

Keep in mind that these are guidelines, as there are so many variables into properly valuing a vehicle, let alone something as complex as a motor home. The

RV blue book guidelines use the basic items into consideration, such as make, model, year, and mileage. A private party buyer will likely only buy vehicles if the RV is in top notch condition. Any of the following flaws will lower the asking price of any RV: rust, dings, or dents in the body, something not working, broken appliances, and excessive wear and tear.

Your two best sources for starting the appraisal process are the Kelly Blue Book for RVs (this comes in both online and hard copy versions, updated at least several times per year), and the NADA RV Appraisal guide. The NADA guide includes suggested retail and wholesale prices, and is updated three times per year. Both of these are great starting points for when you are looking to appraise your RV.

If you own an RV then you might be rather interested to find out that the average RV is made with the most inexpensive parts as possible. Ask any RV Repairman with refrigerators stacked up out back or hundreds of water pumps, motors or even toilets stacked out back or filling their trash cans on the way to the dump. Why you ask?

Well Recreational Vehicle Manufacturers are interested in making money and often will put in inferior parts to save a mere $30.00 bucks and that crap has got to stop. And speaking of human waste let us talk about toilets shall we?

There are several types of recreational vehicle toilets in the RV parts catalogs and one in particular is a real pain in the butt, both literally and figuratively. You see it is a small unit and has some other issues as well. As the waste exits the bottom of the bowl all the interior hollowed out space is subject to the waste before it goes into the hole below.

This is disgusting as there is no way to clean under their and it can really stink. Additionally many of these cheaper units which will save you $25 to $35.00 at the retail level use cheap cables which can break for the flushing feature and then you are beholden to deal with that problem as well. Consider all this in 2006.

Recreational Vehicles Show Greener Side

The best part about owning a recreational vehicle is that it allows you to get close to the wonders of nature. Over the years, RVs and their owners have been building an environmentally friendly image as well.

Go RVing maintains “being green is very important to RV travelers.” The Go RVing Coalition was formed in 1994 and consists of RV manufacturers, com ponent suppliers, dealers and campgrounds.

“A recent survey showed that more than two-thirds of RVers minimize water use on trips, almost half recycle more on RV vacations than on other types and nearly half turn off home utilities before they hit the road. In addition, 94 percent of all RVers travel with two to seven people, meaning the vehicles get more people miles per gallon,” Go RVing reports.

About 80 percent of RVs sold in the United States are actually non-motorized and 30 percent of RV owners have a diesel tow vehicle or motor home, promoting greater fuel efficiency, Go RVing adds.

To compare environmental impacts from vacation methods, a study was done by PKF Consulting, an internationally recognized consulting firm with expertise in travel and tourism. The study, prepared for the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association of Reston, Va., found RV vacations are overall more environmentally friendly than fly/drive/hotel vacations.

The study compared total carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions or carbon footprints. PKF Consulting found that families of four taking RV vacations generate less CO2 than families traveling on a plane, renting a car and staying in a hotel.

“RV vacations are not only fun, affordable and comfortable for families,” RVIA President Richard Coon said, “this study shows that they’re also more green than vacations including flying.”

has categorized the environmental shift by consumers in the RV industry by highlighting new trends and technologies being used to create a substantial market of products with green innovations. These include:

Lighter. New materials and eco-friendly space-age composites. There’s a trailer that can be towed by a Mini Cooper — the trailer weighs just 500 pounds.

Smaller. Manufacturers are starting to produce more small units. Owners still find all the required on-board amenities, such as gourmet kitchens, full bathrooms, home entertainment centers and walls that slide out to increase living space.

Hybrids. Chassis manufacturers have developed diesel/electric hybrid engines, boasting improved mpg of 40 percent over comparably sized gas motor homes.

Aerodynamics. Wind resistance can be a major drag on fuel economy. Manufacturers are making sleeker front ends to address this issue.

Re-thinking. From the wheels up, manufacturers are re-thinking how to design and produce an RV. By changing to a non-traditional chassis, a fully loaded, 30-foot motor home gets 15 mpg while still having all the comforts of home.

RVers. It’s not just RV manufacturers that are going green, but RVers as well. Right now, almost 20 percent of RVers use solar panels to power some of their on-board systems.

Eco-Friendly Components. RV manufacturers are making more use of green textiles, power-saving LED light fixtures and eco-friendly sealants and components.

Camper shells are also known as caps or toppers. These rigid canopies or small housings are mainly used as pick-up truck accessories. Camper shell housings are made out of aluminum or fiberglass. The second largest manufacturer is Arctic Fox located at La Grande, Oregon. People in Canada and the western part of United States still continue to use and buy truck campers. In addition, Canada and the United States are the headquarters of large truck camper manufacturers. Truck campers are also becoming popular in Australia due to its practicality and versatility.

These are also a perfect choice for fishermen, horseback riders and hunters as well as sports enthusiasts. The reason why a lot of outdoor kind of people picks truck campers is that their horse trailers or boats are easily pulled behind and they can camp off the road for relative comfort.

It costs the same as larger recreational vehicles. All amenities must be packed in a smaller package. Recreational vehicles must be able to bear the abuse of bumpy roads

Recreational Vehicle Classes

Some recreational vehicle classes are also considered truck campers.

First is the Clamshell. The construction of this type of recreational vehicle is utilized by two manufacturers from Canada. The two manufacturers are Northern Lite and Bigfoot. This vehicle consists of two fiberglass camper shells horizontally joined together at the center.

Hardside Aluminum is a type of camper that utilizes aluminum or wood framing. The camper is finished with an aluminum siding.

Hardside Filon utilizes wood framing usually made of fir. It is finished with Filon, a thin layer of fiberglass on the backing of the wood.

The popup type is usually low in profile. It is designed to cut down on wind resistance and weight. The construction techniques mentioned above may be applicable for this type of camper except for the Clamshell. This truck’s roof is raised mechanically to add some height.

Camper shells are necessary accessories that owners buy to protect the loads in their trucks. Almost all trucks you see on the road are adorned with these.
