RV Dealer – YouTube – Local RV Dealer Reviews

When I first started camping it was frustrating to explain what I needed when it came to repair or replacement of my RV hardware because here were so many things that fall into the category of RV Hardware. So I am going to try and help the new camper (like me a few years ago) to understand some of the different terminologies. I am not going to go into all of them in this particular article, but focus mostly on the interior hardware. In this explanation I will discuss RV hardware normally found in the hardware section in most RV catalogs beginning with RV Cabinet Hardware.

Cabinet Hardware – RV cabinet hardware would be cabinet latches, positive latches, push latches, and bunk latches.

RV Cabinet Latches – Latches usually requires touching, pulling, or pushing, but usually has one moving part.

RV Cabinet Catches – Again these require pushing or pulling but will have more moving parts. There are also many more catches than latches. Most of them are commonly known as barrel catches, roller catches, magnetic catches, bulldog catches, and concealed roller catches. These are primarily to keep the cabinet door closed while in travel.

RV Cabinet Hinges – These are pretty self-explanatory, however, there different types of hinges. In addition to finishes such as brass hinges, antique finished hinges, stainless steel, and/or brushed nickel, there are hinges that are free swinging, self-closing and self supporting.

RV Cabinet Door Struts – Cabinet door struts are mostly spring-loaded arms that keep the cabinet door raised when you open it, so that you don’t have to hold the door up as you are trying to remove or place articles in the cabinet. These struts are most commonly found on doors that raise horizontally. They’re very popular because they are user-friendly, at least most of the time.

Cabinet Drawer Hardware – Cabinet door hardware is pretty much limited to drawer slides sockets, drawer bumpers, drawer slide kits. The slides in sockets are available in plastic and metal. It’s important to remember that if you are purchasing parts for cabinet drawers you will usually need to know if it is for the left or the right side.

RV Window Hardware is the next segment and covers quite a few part numbers and part types due to the variety and quantity of window cranks with differing sizes and shapes. There are a number of RV manufacturers that supply window covering hardware, but for the most part window covering hardware can be purchased through your local RV dealership or from an online RV Parts Dealer store. The parts I am referring to are snaps, hooks, blind quieters, curtain tracks, snap tape, curtain hold-down’s, and curtains themselves.

RV Bed/ Door Gas Props – Gas props are used mainly for doors, bed lifts and compartment doors. Gas props when replaced need to be replaced with the correct one. This is important because they need to match the length, pounds that they will hold, and the height that they will extend to. Using the wrong prop can cause damage and injury to both the RV and yourself. Make sure if you need help in this area to ask for it. Often times if you’re replacing a gas prop you will need to replace the brackets as well. When securing them to the surface and you use the same holes, make sure not to strip it out even though you want it to be held tightly in place.

RV Compartment Door Hardware – This type of hardware can be frustrating. RV baggage door catches and latches can be found in different shapes and sizes. While the reality is there are only a few types, there are many styles. RV baggage door catches can have either squared or rounded ends and come in white, kind of white (called colonial white), beige, black, and chrome colors as well as stainless steel. The circumference of most RV compartment doors or RV baggage doors, which ever you decide to call them, is almost always the same but the length usually comes in four sizes. They also have two different ways to secure the baggage doors, keyed meaning you can lock them, or thumb blocks, which secures the door, but does not lock them.

RV Entry Door Hardware – Entry door hardware consists of grab handles, and entry door holders. Grab handles are mounted on the side of the door and helps one enter the RV more safely. Door holders are used to hold the door open securely. RV door holders come in different lengths, angles, colors, and styles. When replacing a RV door holder, it is easy to take off and put on, and also easy to identify what you have.

I think this is enough information for this article. I will cover some other RV hardware in future articles. They will be talking about awning hardware, window awning hardware, RV door locks, and other related RV hardware.

RV Dealer – YouTube – Trailers in Napa CA Adventure RV of Napa

First came the slide out, dramatically increasing inside living space of the modern RV. It did not take long for RV awning manufacturers such as Dometic’s A&E and Carefree of Colorado to recognize and seize upon an opportunity and the slide out cover was born.

Attaching to the outside of the slide room and on an awning rail mounted on the RV just above the slide room while utilizing a awning roller tube always under tension the slide topper awning automatically rolls up as the slide room is retracted. The sales pitch for slide topper covers are many and I would like to cover these from my perspective, that of an RV technician.

Slide covers provide an obvious benefit of keeping all sorts of debris such as tree limbs, twigs, and leaves off the slide roof because most of us do not crawl up on our roofs to inspect our slides every time we are ready to move our RV. The upper slide seal is particularly vulnerable to foreign debris so its paramount the top of the slide is clean as it is retracted. It is difficult enough to keep outdoor elements out of your RV in the slide areas so these areas need to be protected as best as possible.

Another benefit is keeping direct sunlight off the top of the slide. Some RV manufacturers utilize a “tape seal” on the outside seam of the roof that will dry and crack with repeated exposure to direct sunlight. In addition, anytime you can provide an atmosphere of shade to anything you have just prolonged the life of the object, slides included.

Slide covers provide real benefits and certainly are worth the investment. I am amused however by some of the other sales pitches, which I think, should be taken with a grain of salt.

A sales pitch easily sold is the one where they profess slide toppers help keep water off the slide and helps prevent leaks around the slide room. Perhaps… if you have rain falling neatly at a perfect 90 degree angle to the ground, but I am still waiting to observe such a phenomenon. After most rains there will be water on the slide roof and after a rainstorm you can bet on it. In the case of snow, I would rather see snow on the awning rather than the room.

Here is a good one! Slide covers keep your slide room cool and comfortable. Maybe…but I doubt it. I could be wrong but I do not see the slide cover making an appreciable difference in inside temperatures.

In conclusion, slide covers are certainly worth the investment, which is why you see them on most RV’s today. On lower end units manufacturers will tend to leave them off primarily to make the RV that much more affordable but sooner or later many consumers will have them installed. Naturally, with slide covers you have one more item to be maintained so I must address the issue of durability of the awning material. There are many different grades and types of material used but acrylic and vinyl are the most prevalent.

Truthfully, awning covers take a beating from both the sun and the wind and the complaints are numerous concerning OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) material. Be aware that heavier fabric and tighter webbing is better when replacing awning material.

RV Dealer – YouTube – Orlando RV Dealer Toy Hauler

RVs are a personal thing. Some people like the versatility of a lightweight trailer while others wouldn’t be caught dead in anything less than a forty-five foot bus conversion. In any case, there are a few features and characteristics that are nice to have in any RV. Some are usually only feasible in larger motorhomes or fifth wheels while others are viable in any RV. Keep these in mind when you’re purchasing an RV or planning your next remodeling project.

1) Easy to Maintain Floors

Regardless of the type of flooring you prefer – the key is maintainability. If the floors in your RV are hard to keep clean and difficult to maintain, you’ve got the wrong flooring. For ease of maintenance, look into vinyl tile, linoleum, or plastic-laminate wood. For a good compromise, consider carpeting in the living room area and tile (or linoleum) in the kitchen and bathroom areas. In heavy traffic areas, use a carpet or vinyl runner for extra protection.

2) A Re-Configurable Dining Area

Removing a fixed dinette and replacing it with a free-standing set of table and chairs is one of the most commonly performed remodeling projects. Unfortunately, some manufacturers make this task a great deal harder than it should be. Nevertheless, it’s still worth the effort for those that want the flexibility and the breathing room that this particular arrangement offers.

3) An Island Style Bed

An ‘island style bed’ is not an exotic bed that’s designed by indigenous islanders for ritualistic purposes. Instead, it’s merely a bed that can be accessed from three sides. Beds that have two sides against a wall can be a real challenge when changing the sheets. Furthermore, when two people are sleeping in the bed, the person against the wall not only has less breathing room – they also have to find some way to get up without climbing over their partner.

4) A Flip-up Kitchen Counter Extension

RV kitchen are frequently short on useful workspace. A large flip-up countertop extension can provide badly needed surface area whenever you need it. You can make your own using plywood and hardware from your RV dealer. Alternatively, IKEA (www.IKEA-usa.com) sells a wood drop leaf table (called the NORBO) that can easily be adapted to serve as a countertop extension. It cost around $30 (plus shipping).

5) An Adjustable Television Set

Most RVs come with televisions that are mounted inside a cabinet. As a result, people have to twist their bodies, turn sideways, or move their chairs to get a good view (assuming their chair even moves). It makes a lot more sense to have a television that can be configured for the viewer. A good alternative is a flat-screen television attached to a flexible TV mount that can be extended, rotated, and tilted in all directions. You can find them in good appliance stores or on the Internet.

6) Flexible Wardrobes

When it comes to closets and wardrobes, most RV manufacturers throw in a closet, install a closet rod, and call it good. That works great if everything you own can be hung on a coat hanger. However, with some adjustable shelving and a few bins, wardrobes and closets can be easily configured to meet the storage needs of everything and everyone.

7) A Dedicated Workspace

Most RV manufacturers haven’t yet addressed the fact that RVers need a dedicated place to work. A few RVs have token desks but they frequently don’t offer enough surface area for serious use. Moreover, many of these desks are located in the bedroom rendering them useless for those that work after hours. Genuine work areas should have enough surface area for a laptop computer as well as a printer. They should also have enough space for a real office chair with wheels.

8) Separate Vanity and Toilet

When a bathroom vanity is in the same room as the toilet, both fixtures are tied up when either one is being used. When they’re separate, one person can brush their teeth while the other uses the toilet. This may sound trivial but in a one-bathroom ‘house’, issues like this can make a big difference.

9) Well-designed Food Pantries

The best RV kitchens have pull-out food pantries that are specifically designed for canned goods, spices, and other commonly stored items. Look for adjustable, display-style shelves that are removable for easy cleaning.

10) An Accessible Bathroom

Some RVs have ‘private’ bathrooms that are located in the rear of the bedroom. The concept is similar to the master bedroom that is often found in houses. However, in a real house, there is usually more than one bathroom. In an RV, this design means that everyone has to parade through your bedroom to use the toilet. Not always a good idea.

11) Real Doors

Privacy is no less important simply because you’re staying in an RV. Accordingly, bathroom and bedroom doors should be solid and capable of being locked. Likewise, in toy haulers, there should be a solid door separating the living quarters from the ‘garage’ to keep fumes out of the living quarters.

12) Lots of Windows

RVs are largely about experiencing the great outdoors. Windows help to bring the outside in. They also make an RV seem brighter, bigger, and more cheerful. Many RVers routinely install extra windows in their RV. Ask your dealer for a list of companies that sell RV windows.
